Prepare to teach in a "toggle" environment

What is Hybrid Teaching?

The hybrid model of teaching and learning uses both online and in-person options. A hybrid course is not a normal course that is now online, or a normal course with added online components. Be careful that your course is not “a course and a half." Try these best practices:

  • Take time to build community and make connections with your students.
  • Give students time to interact with each other.
  • Provide opportunities for students to give you feedback on the course (what is going well, what has been challenging, what would they like to learn more about?).
  • Provide ways to monitor student progress. Give smaller assignments at the beginning of the course to see what students understand and what they are struggling with. This will also give you an idea of where students may need support. Don't forget the Writing Team!
  • Keep adjusting and improving your course as you learn what works best for your students.

The pandemic has taught us already that we can learn technology faster than we thought we could. While adapting to all that is new, we can adopt new ways of learning that enable our students to take more responsibility for their learning.
