Cultural Awareness

  • Students are excellent at memorizing things, so objective tests and quizzes may not accurately gauge comprehension.
  • Seminary study in India does not usually include independent research or writing. One exception: exegesis papers.
  • Indian seminary classes are generally 1 or 2 credits; may only last a couple of weeks on a focused topic; are generally a large lecture, followed by final test to see how much information retained (more of a European model).
  • Students will watch the professor videos as a group, and often rewatch them together.

Technical Aspects

  • Texts must be able to be used on a Kindle Fire 7 and be available from Amazon
  • Students have Kindle 7 for their textbooks
  • Students have access to a shared computer with hardwired Internet access.  Internet access can be spotty.
  • Library support is available to students

Writing Assignments

  • Each ART course is 3 credits - 2 are for the content, 1 for writing
  • You will need to assign a 3-8 page writing assignment as part of the grade
  • A librarian is available to help with writing assignments via email.

Online Teaching Best Practices

  • Create instructional videos using PowerPoint, ScreenPal (formerly Screen Cast-o-matic), or include the script
  • Speak distinctly and at a slightly slower pace - technical issues can make listening difficult
  • Chunk content into segments no longer than 20 minutes. Allow students to stop and discuss between sections.  Give guiding questions
  • Discussion boards are well-used
  • Students tend to ignore some assignment limitations (i.e., 2 pages become 8), so make sure this is enforced kindly
  • Students may not give critical feedback to other students at first; encourage them to do so (similar to their habit of providing homily feedback to each other)
