The Dehon Study Center in Rome sponsors and publishes research on and translations of the founder of the SCJs, and on topics of interest to Dehonians worldwide. The site is available in English and Italian.

United States Province

Ministry in the United States began in 1923 in a small mission on the Lower Brule Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Our work now extends from South Dakota to Wisconsin, Mississippi, Florida and Texas, reaching across ethnic, social, and economic lines.

In Houston, the Priests of the Sacred Heart are in the central city parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of the oldest Hispanic parishes in the state.

In Mississippi, Dehonians are responsible for the Church’s ministry in five northwestern counties of the state. Through Sacred Heart Southern Missions, SCJs offer social services and emergency aid, advocacy, housing, education, job training and counseling. The Sacred Heart Auto League, which promotes safe, prayerful driving, is also a part of SHSM’s ministry.

Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wis., prepares men from around the country – and the world – for ordained ministry. It also offers master’s programs for lay students, and an internationally regarded ESL program specifically designed for those in or preparing for ministry in the Church.

The Priests of the Sacred Heart minister at St. Martin of Tours parish in Franklin, Wis., where they also serve the Vietnamese Catholic community of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Just a few miles away, Dehonians operate Sacred Heart at Monastery Lake, a senior apartment community with several units reserved for those low incomes.

One of our oldest ministries in the United States is St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, South Dakota, a school for at-risk Native American children. Since it first opened its doors in 1927, the school has expanded its outreach well beyond the classroom with family counseling, healthcare, social programs, and education in Lakota traditions.

OLG in Houston has been ministering to Spanish-speaking parishioners, primarily Mexican, since 1912.
Sacred Heart Seminary & School of Theology
Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology is dedicated to serving God’s people by preparing men of all ages for priesthood and by educating others for ministry in the Roman Catholic Church. It is committed to academic excellence, authentic human and spiritual formation with an emphasis on the Eucharist and social justice, and formation of effective Church leaders with pastoral hearts.
Sacred Heart Southern Missions
Sacred Heart Southern Missions staffs and funds the programs and work of two Catholic elementary schools, eight Catholic social service offices serving over 3000 families each month, including the only ministry in the area to HIV/AIDS patients and their families. We staff a housing program including Dehon Village with 38 single family homes for low-income families whose rent is subsidized by Sacred Heart Southern Missions. Our priests serve six widely scattered parishes in an area that is only two per cent Catholic.
St. Joseph's Indian School
Our mission is to educate Native American children and their families for life — mind, body, heart and spirit. Child poverty and abuse are serious issues on Indian reservations. The school helps students in learning the Lakota language, studying Native American culture and healing the broken family circle from which they come.
