AI and the classroom

A faculty guide

What AI can do

  • AI can produce text that:
    • Resembles text produced by humans and mimics critical thinking and originality;
    • Is grammatically correct;
    • Is difficult to detect as AI;
    • Is not copied from another source, so that its output is not technically "plagiarized;"
    • Is machine-generated and thus, is subject to error and "hallucination."
  • AI can also generate "creative" content, such as poems, stories, songs, videos, and images, based on the user's input.
  • AI has largely been trained on the internet, so that, like the internet, it:
    • Reflects societal biases and prejudices;
    • Under-represents viewpoints of minorities or marginalized peoples;
    • Is capable of producing vast amounts of misinformation and disinformation.

What AI cannot do...THINK!

  • Think logically or critically;
  • Think ethically, morally, or wisely;
  • Think creatively;
  • Make judgments based on personal experiences or cultural contexts;
  • Provide information that was generated after its training date;
  • Fact-check.
