It is common to conclude an exegesis with an application. You have researched the background and meaning of your text. Now you need to answer one final question, "So what?" or "Why does it matter what this passage means?"
Up to this point, your paper has focused on interpretation. Although the historic context and meaning of your passage is of intellectual interest, the application of the passage is probably of most interest to a modern audience. How does this passage give insight into their lives? How does this passage impact how they behave or should behave?
There are many ways to derive an application from a passage. Here are a few suggestions:
- Start with your own interest. What made you curious about your passage? What implications are there for your own life? Chances are your audience will have similar questions.
- If your passage contains instructions or commands, do they have implications for modern life?
- If your passage is a narrative, can an analogy be drawn to a current situation?
- Is there a theme of the passage that can be carried out today?
